According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the total of 45,367 motorcycles are reportedly stolen in 2013 in the United States, while 46,601 motorcycles in 2012. This shows a 1.5% drop in motorcycle thefts in 2013 although motorcycle sales increase by a rate of 1.5%. However, it is apparently true that one bike is being stolen in the U.S for every 9.4 minutes.

Motorcycle theft has become a seasonal activity with hands connected to organized crimes. Stolen motorcycles, if not quickly recovered, are teared down to their bones with their parts finding their way into the black market supply chain, while others are kept intake and resold to inexperienced or unsuspecting buyers or even exported to other foreign countries for higher prices.

According to data compiled by NICB, among the total 45,367 motorcycle stolen in 2013, 553 motorcycle makes have been identified, in which Honda is clearly the top brand, with 8,557 thefts, followed by Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Harley Davidson and so on.

The analysis found that the rate of thefts was most active in warmer months with July and August being the highest for thefts, while January and February — the lowest, according to NICB reports. It further says that the top states with the highest theft rate are California, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Indiana, etc, in which New York city, Las Vegas, San Diego are the leading cities.

If you live in California and own a Honda, keeping a close eye on your motorcycle is recommended because statistically, you are more likely to be a victim of motorcycle theft than others in the entire nation. So, lock the bike at night in an enclosed garage at home and find well-lit parking in night-time outing. It is also a good idea to secure your bike to an unmovable object. There are also various modern motorcycle security or anti-theft/alarm/recovery systems which you can add to your bike.

Only 16, 864 of the motorcycles were reportedly recovered that made only 37.1% out of the total 45,367 stolen motorcycles in 2013.
